Myths about studying abroad

I had a great chat with some master’s degree aspirants recently, and uncovered a few myths about studying abroad:
- The belief that top-tier US universities are exclusively for students from IITs, NITs, or BITS is false. Admissions committees prioritize your achievements and profile rather than just your alma mater.
- Contrary to popular belief, test scores aren’t the sole determinant for your application. While GRE, TOEFL, or IELTS are important, they don’t define your entire application. A slight score difference doesn’t change your prospects significantly.
- Concerned about the cost of grad school? Don’t worry, universities offer scholarships and assistantships. Additionally, organizations like Tata and programs like Fulbright also provide financial aid to eligible students. A strong profile can even secure you a full-ride scholarship.
- Think you have to pay application fees every time? Check out my recent tweet on how to obtain application fee waivers. You can save some bucks with the right strategies.
- Your GPA doesn’t have to be flawless. I know people with GPAs less than 9 of 10 who got into Ivy League schools. Your application allows you to explain any shortcomings or challenges you faced during your academic journey.
- Grad school isn’t just about academics. It’s also about networking. Strong alumni networks can open many doors. Attend events, mingle with people, and expand your professional connections on platforms like LinkedIn.
